Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to celebrate with family and friends, but it’s also the peak day for home cooking fires and cooking-related injuries. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says that most turkey fryer accidents occur while the oil is being heated, before adding the turkey. Make your own delicious deep friend turkey safely this year and avoid fire damage to your home with these helpful tips:
Never leave a turkey fryer unattended when in use. The oil used in turkey fryers can splatter and overheat, burning turkeys and causing fire concerns.
Place fryer in an open area away from all walls, fences, or other structures. The intense heat and oil splatter could cause structures to become burnt or catch fire.
Never use your turkey fryer in, on or under your home’s structure that could cause a home fire like a garage, breezeway, carport, or porch.
Completely thaw and dry turkeys before cooking. A partially frozen or wet turkey can produce excessive hot oil splatter when added to the oil, causing injury to those nearby.
Center the pot over the burner on the cooker. An uneven pot could tip and spill hot oil on people and belongings.
Raise and lower food slowly to reduce splatter and avoid burns. Those monitoring the turkey fryer should cover any bare skin when adding or removing food.
Check the oil temperature frequently and make certain it doesn’t increase past the recommended temperature.
Turn the fryer gas supply off if the oil begins to smoke.
If a turkey fryer fire occurs, immediately call 911. Do not attempt to extinguish fire with water.
Don’t attempt to clean-up smoke damage or fire damage yourself.
If you experience fire damage or smoke damage to your home or business this Thanksgiving, don’t attempt to provide fire mitigation services yourself. Using over-the-counter products and improper cleaning methods will cause the soot damage to permanently “set” on a variety of surfaces, materials and belongings. This will make the cleanup efforts more costly and cause certain items to be discarded.
