Prepare For Winter Weather To Avoid Business Interruptions

New Englanders know that chances are we’ll experience some sort of harsh winter weather this year. From Nor’easters disrupting supply chains, to powerful wind gusts causing power outages, to ice storms creating slippery driving conditions, our unpredictable winter weather conditions have the potential to damage properties, vehicles and interrupt business operations.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as much as 40% of all businesses were affected across several states and regions in 2024, and businesses outside those areas experienced an adverse economic impact as well. No matter what this winter season may hold, businesses of all sizes can be better prepared to minimize damage and disruptions with these building and operational planning tips:

Building Preparations:

  • Prevent ice dams by implementing a preventive roof maintenance plan that involves periodically inspecting the roof drainage system for proper flow, including drains, scuppers, gutters and down spouts.
  • Before turning on the furnace, clean or replace the filter and check the blower belt and motor. Ensure all vents in your business are unobstructed and remove any flammable objects from around the furnace and water heater.
  • Remind employees to use caution with electric space heaters. Choose heaters with automatic shut-off switches and non-glowing elements, and never place a space heater on top of furniture or near water.
  • Protect pipes against freezing by paying careful attention to temperature and water flow throughout the winter and adding insulation.
  • Check the strength of your roof and its capacity for snow. Have the roof inspected for broken shingles or concerns that could cause water damage.

Operations Planning:

  • Create a snow removal plan to ensure safe access to your facility for employees, customers and suppliers.
  • Plan for alternative power supplies like backup generators in order to continue operating some or all of your needed electrical equipment. Also plan for alternative vendors in case your usual supply sources can’t deliver needed items in a timely manner.
  • Create a business continuity plan to help you avoid halting or slowing down your operations. Having a plan in place ensures that your employees will know what steps to take in the event of inclement weather or unexpected disaster.
  • Plan for working remotely. If your team can continue operations away from your business, create a plan for employees to work remotely with tools needed like laptops, phones and access to meeting platforms such as ZOOM and Teams.
