The winter months bring colder weather, and with it an increased chance of a common and costly problem -- water pipe bursts. Pipes of any material can burst, including PVC, plastic, iron and lead.
To prevent pipe damage during severe cold, make certain to:
- Insulate your water pipes.
- Consider installing a heating cable.
- Open cabinet doors. It's not unusual for plumbing running to a kitchen sink or an exterior wall to be vulnerable due to little insulation. Open the cabinet doors along that wall to project heat.
- And if your water pipes are uninsulated, let water flow through (even if only a drip or trickle). Doing so will ensure the water won't have the opportunity to freeze and pipes should survive until temperatures warm above freezing.
